Jay!
facebook chat has been jabber from the start (well, since they started the official chat functionality)
Damn right!
XMPP= JABBER
Actually, Jabber can be considered to be a sub-protocol of XMPP nowadays.
@sdf: I heard they used XMPP as the internal protocol (hidden behind HTTP/AJAX, not sure whether they use BOSH), but has it always been available as a public XMPP service?
Wow… how long has it been since they first told people they were going to implement this.. Its about time
@ Nicolas – It was not always available as a public xmpp service, this is new
If it actually is becoming reality, I have tw… three words: about fucking time: http://developers.facebook.com/news.php?blog=1&story=110.
I have no idea whether they have used XMPP as the internal protocol, but for sure it hasn’t been publicly available and still isn’t. See http://serendipity.ruwenzori.net/index.php/2009/05/13/happy-birthday-facebook-jabberxmpp-chat-vaporware for more information
lets pray it will happen…
Here you can find a pidgin (and telepathy) plugin for facebook : http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
I wonder if this chat.facebook.com has been up for months and we just stumbled across it now? In other words… there is actually no news at all.
I tried username@chat.facebook.com and [facebook id #]@chat.facebook.com, neither worked.
Ian,
Did you try the e-mail address?
it would be cool to have public jabber/xmpp service! The pidgin facebook chat plugin is a nightmare, it causes for me to have crash in every hour or so, going online/offline every time, almost impossible to use, which is a problem since I have many fb friends, but I don’t wanna use web browser to chat, it’s so uncomfortable ….
Its a good news if they really want to used such plug in for facebook chat for more accessibility. But just like what others say, up to now it was not yet implemented and time running day after day.
