it would be cool to have public jabber/xmpp service! The pidgin facebook chat plugin is a nightmare, it causes for me to have crash in every hour or so, going online/offline every time, almost impossible to use, which is a problem since I have many fb friends, but I don't wanna use web browser to chat, it's so uncomfortable ....

I wonder if this chat.facebook.com has been up for months and we just stumbled across it now? In other words... there is actually no news at all.

I tried username@chat.facebook.com and [facebook id #]@chat.facebook.com, neither worked.

If it actually is becoming reality, I have tw... three words: about fucking time: http://developers.facebook.com/news.php?blog=1&story=110.

I have no idea whether they have used XMPP as the internal protocol, but for sure it hasn't been publicly available and still isn't. See http://serendipity.ruwenzori.net/index.php/2009/05/13/happy-birthday-facebook-jabberxmpp-chat-vaporware for more information

@sdf: I heard they used XMPP as the internal protocol (hidden behind HTTP/AJAX, not sure whether they use BOSH), but has it always been available as a public XMPP service?
